PEDJA MUZIJEVIC- Guest Speaker
PEDJA MUZIJEVIC has been the artistic administrator at Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York since its opening in 2005. He also the director of Concert in the21st Century a residency at the Banff Centre. Born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina where he studied piano with Vladimir Krpan at the Academy of Music in Zagreb. He came to the United States in 1984 to continue his education at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and Juilliard School in New York. His mentors included pianists Joseph Kalichstein and Jerome Lowenthal, harpsichordist Albert Fuller and violinists Robert Mann and Joel Smirnoff.
His Musical career is by creative programming, unusual combinations of new and old music, and lasting collaborations with artists and ensembles. Pedja’s symphonic engagements include performances with the Atlanta Symphony, Dresden Philharmonic, Milwaukee Symphony, New Jersey Symphony, Orquesta Sinfonica in Montevideo, Residentie Orkest in The Hague, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and many many others. His Carnegie Hall concerto debut playing Mozart Concerto K. 503 with Oberlin Symphony and Robert Spano was recorded live and has been released on the Oberlin Music label.
Pedja’s solo recordings include Haydn Dialogues (live recording of a recital program of four Haydn sonatas interspersed with works by Jonathan Berger, John Cage and Morton Feldman) and Sonatas and Other Interludes(juxtaposing Sonatas and Interludes by John Cage with composers ranging from W. F. Bach and D. Scarlatti to F. Liszt and R. Schumann). His discography also include aforementioned Mozart Piano Concerto K. 503 with Oberlin Symphony and Robert Spano, recorded in concert at Carnegie Hall and two CDs on 18th and 19th fortepianos – a Schumann Salon and Mozart and Beethoven Quintets for piano and woodwinds.
JUSTIN WADDELL- Moderator
JUSTIN WADDELL graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design and received his MFA in Integrated Media from the University of Windsor. He has worked in various capacities at several Artist-Run Centers, Festivals, Galleries, and Magazines in Canada. Waddell has served as the Director of Programming at YYZ Artists’ Outlet, the Director of the Stride Art Gallery Association, and as a Board Member of the Calgary Cinematheque, M.S.T. Performative Art Festival; EAR (Elephant Artist Relief), a society that provides practical resources to visual artists to help sustain their wellbeing and livelihood; LUMA, a quarterly online publication about independent film and media art; and as a founding Board Member with the every-age art and music venue, Local Library. Currently, Waddell is a member of the Board of Directors at Truck Art Gallery. His work and research is rooted in the development of a personal narrative of experimentation and process. Right now, he is researching the history of inventors killed by their own inventions and is in an exhibition about the Weather. Waddell lives in Calgary, Alberta where he is an Associate Professor in the School of Visual Art at the Alberta College of Art and Design.
